BK Apartment

Location and type of project: Surry Hills, Apartment Renovation & Extension
Date of completion: August 2024
Architect: Miles / Thorpe Architects
Photographer: Clinton Weaver

This project saw two lower apartments within an 1860’s Victorian terrace consolidated into one family home. The goal was to create a space that feels expansive and connected to the outdoors despite a relatively modest footprint and inner-city location.

The design by Miles Thorpe Architects features several techniques that successfully open and extend the terrace to the sky above and rear courtyard beyond. An ample glazed roof, that bridges old with new, floods the downstairs living spaces with natural light allowing the centrally positioned kitchen on the ground floor to remain airy and bright.

At the rear of the property on the ground level, floor to ceiling and full width glass doors maximise the connection to the outdoors. Above, hit and miss brickwork serves to allow light into the rear bedroom while also providing privacy and seclusion.

Classified as a Class 2 building, tight construction constraints applied requiring collaboration between several parties and ongoing management to ensure project timelines and client expectations were met.

Class 2 limitations, restricted access of an inner-city block, major structural alterations and a fixed deadline, made for a project that was not without its challenges.

The outcome however is a home that delights and delivers in terms of both quality and design intent.

“Hit and miss brickwork serves to allow light into the rear bedroom while also providing privacy and seclusion.”
